Tia’s Perspective

Let’s talk about exhibiting opportunities at local businesses, primarily coffee shops. I have participated in a few exhibits at coffee shops. I was excited for the opportunity, and I even sold a couple of originals, a print, and gained a subscriber or two.

For the right artists, it isn’t a bad model. 6-8 weeks exhibiting in highly visible public spaces solo or maybe with one other artist. It is the START of a great opportunity, but I quickly realized it lacks something very important… collaboration.

My first solo exhibit opportunity had spoiled me for these others. I was invited by my hair stylist to exhibit in her salon studio, and I did for a year - during the pandemic of all times. Still, with salons shut down part of the year, people staying home and cutting their own hair, I still sold art regularly from her salon. Matter of fact, a quarter of my sales that year came from that exhibit.

In comparison, the coffee shop exhibits fell flat and were somewhat disappointing. I instantly knew why: Collaboration. Let me explain.

  1. I had a relationship with the stylist. She knew me, we talked, and she knew stories behind the artwork. That means that when her clients noticed an artwork, she could talk about it and about me. People love to know about the artwork and the artist.

  2. We chose the artwork that went up in her space together. This ensured I was complimenting the intended vibe in her space. I was contributing to her branding, and with the right alignment, her clients were a natural audience for my artwork.

  3. We marketed together, particularly on social media. We interacted with each other’s accounts and attended each other’s events, promoting those events to our own audiences.

  4. She truly wanted me to succeed, and she was motivated to see me make sales. It was because of our relationship, but there are other ways to provide motivation, and commissions or donations to a nonprofit are great ways to get a business invested in your success.

So, I created a business model for myself and started networking. I am here to tell you, there are more businesses interested in this model than I could possibly imagine providing artwork for. So, I am inviting artists to join me as I build Aligned Exhibits and the Sunshine Align Artists Community. You can certainly do this on your own, but it will be more work and you will be on your own. There is strength in community. Join us.
